No AI Quizzes in ReadnQuiz
We do not accept quizzes written by AI. Not because of any ideological stance, but because the questions are usually bad.
AI Cannot Read the Book
Contrary to popular belief, AI does not have books in memory and cannot access books online where it can "read" them. It only has information about the book from the web: summaries, reviews, discussion groups, etc. Imagine 10 questions taken from the dust jacket. Even worse, imagine questions based on conflicting interpretations of the story from a discussion group. They tend to be simple and repetitive and, often, just wrong.
AI Can Hallucinate
AI is designed to generate text that sounds convincing, not necessarily accurate. When an AI doesn’t know a specific character name, setting, or sequence, it fills the gaps with fabricated names and events that sound authentic but confuse students who actually read the book.
AI Relies on Generic Plot Tropes
Without direct reference to the text, AI will use statistical probability and genre clichés. Questions become predictable, measuring generic story intuition rather than specific reading accountability.
What If You Read the Book?
Even if you verify the questions and delete hallucinations, AI still gives you a bad quiz. Because its knowledge of the book is shallow and generic, you end up with "dust jacket" questions that don’t represent the entire book and cannot measure genuine student comprehension.
The Consequences
We get complaints from students and teachers that a certain question is not in the book. That is very discouraging for a student taking a quiz. It can be crushing if such a question causes them to fail. It also undermines their faith in our program and creates extra work for our staff.
